The Cowshed is a one-bedroom lodge with a separate living room — at around 500 sq ft, it's twice the size of The Butterchurn for the same two people. The bedroom is approximately 14ft by 14ft, with a superking bed and French doors onto a private terrace.

What isn't here

Worth knowing before you book:

• No television. None of our lodges have one — that's deliberate, though the wifi is good throughout

• No dishwasher

• No dogs. We don't accept them anywhere on the site

• The washing machine and dryer are in the Boot Room, a separate building shared with other guests

Who it suits

Two people who want room to spread out, and who'd rather not have the bed in the same room as the sofa. The hot tub is one of our larger ones, sized for four to six, which is more space than two people strictly need — no complaints so far.

The building

The Cowshed and The Butterchurn together formed the original cowshed, back when The Firs was a dairy farm in the 1970s. The ceilings, beams and doorways are the original framework, and the floor sloped significantly — which is why ground levels and ceiling heights still change as you move through.

The dairy's internal sliding door is back in its original position. The open window between the kitchen and the snug is the one that was always there. The pamment tiles from the dairy floor were lifted and reused as the hearth for the wood-burning stove. The larger external dairy door is still sitting in the barn, waiting for us to find the right spot for it.
