The Butterchurn: a one-bedroom lodge for two at The Firs

The Butterchurn is the smallest of our six lodges, and the one people tend to book when they want as little as possible between them and the countryside. It's a studio: bed, sofa, kitchen and dining table all in one room, with a star-gazing window above the bed.

What isn't here
Worth knowing before you book:
No television. None of our lodges have one — that's deliberate, though the wifi is good throughout
No dishwasher
No dogs. We don't accept them anywhere on the site
The washing machine and dryer are in the Boot Room, a separate building shared with other guests

Who it suits
Two people who want a proper retreat rather than a base for day trips. There's one room, so it works if you're comfortable sharing a space entirely. If you'd rather have a separate living room, The Cowshed is the better fit at the same capacity.
The building
The Butterchurn and The Cowshed together formed the original cowshed, back when The Firs was a dairy farm in the 1970s. A great deal of milk passed through this building.
The ceilings, beams and doorways are the original framework. The old dairy floor sloped significantly, which is why the ground levels and ceiling heights still shift as you move through. We lifted the pamment tiles that covered that floor and reused some of them as the hearth for the wood-burning stove.
