Rainy-day ideas for a family stay in the Suffolk countryside

A rainy day on a family stay at The Firs is no disaster — it's an excuse to slow down. This is a Suffolk countryside retreat that's just as good under grey skies as blue, and with Norwich only 45 minutes away and London 2 hours back down the road, there's plenty within reach when the weather turns. Here are our favourite wet-weather plans for families.
Stay in and make it cosy. Light the wood-burning stove, get the board games out, and let the day go slow. The lodges are snug and beautifully styled, the kind of space where a rainy afternoon with hot chocolate and a film feels like a treat rather than a write-off.
Cook together. Rain or shine, the pizza oven in the covered outdoor kitchen is a brilliant family activity — everyone builds their own, and the kids get the fun of cooking on fire without getting soaked. A drizzly evening and a hot pizza oven is a surprisingly perfect combination.
Brave the hot tub anyway. A wood-fired hot tub in light rain is one of life's underrated pleasures — warm water, fresh air, and the novelty of being out in the weather while perfectly warm. Children love it.
Head to Norwich. Just 45 minutes away, the city offers a castle, a cathedral, museums and indoor shopping — a proper rainy-day adventure when you need to get out and burn some energy.
Explore the coast in the wet. Southwold and Aldeburgh are wonderful in any weather: a blowy beach walk followed by warming fish and chips is peak Suffolk, and there's no such thing as a wrong-weather day by the sea with the right coats on.
Rainy days are part of a UK stay — and at The Firs, they're some of the cosiest.
