Families staying at The Firs are spoilt for choice: within an hour of our countryside retreat you'll find beaches, castles, nature reserves and farm parks to fill a whole week. As a base, we're hard to beat — four acres to roam, and the best of Suffolk within easy reach. We're 2 hours from London and 45 minutes from Norwich. Here are our ten favourites.

  1. The Firs gardens themselves. Start at home: explore the kitchen garden, roam the grounds and play garden games across four acres. For little ones, this is often the highlight.

  2. Southwold. A classic seaside day — the pier with its traditional amusements, the lighthouse, painted beach huts and sandy beach.

  3. Framlingham Castle. Walk the complete wall-walk of a genuine 12th-century castle (English Heritage). Bring a kite for the meadow below.

  4. RSPB Minsmere. A brilliant family nature reserve with a Wild Zone, trails and hides — the Springwatch reserve, alive with birds and beasts.

  5. Aldeburgh beach. Fish and chips on the shingle, the Scallop sculpture to clamber by, and boats to watch.

  6. Dunwich Heath & beach (National Trust). Heathland walks, a big quiet beach and a lovely tea-room.

  7. Walberswick. The home of the British Open Crabbing Championship — a bucket, a line and a happy afternoon.

  8. Easton Farm Park. A proper family farm attraction with animals to meet and plenty for younger children.

  9. Africa Alive! (near Kessingland). A wildlife park with lions, giraffes and rhinos, about 40 minutes away.

  10. A boat on the Broads. Hire a day-boat and potter the waterways — a gentle adventure the whole family will remember.

Spread these across a week and you'll never hear "I'm bored" — and every evening, you've a calm countryside retreat to come home to, with hot tubs for the grown-ups once the children are asleep.

For family UK stays with this much on the doorstep, The Firs is a wonderful base.
