How to Host a 40th Birthday Weekend in Suffolk

A 40th deserves more than a table booking and a taxi home at eleven. Give it a whole weekend and something shifts — there's time for the long lunch and the late-night fire, the lazy second morning, the walk that turns into a pub stop. The setting

The Firs sits on four acres in Cratfield, deep in the quiet middle of Suffolk and roughly halfway between the coast and the Broads. Six lodges — a mix of converted farm buildings and luxury safari tents — are scattered across the grounds, along with a kitchen garden, a flock of hens and a moat for anyone brave enough to swim it. Hire the whole site and the place is yours alone.

Where everyone sleeps

The six lodges sleep up to sixteen between them, in a mix of two-person boltholes and four-person family lodges. Each has a wood-burning stove and that private hot tub, and several have roll-top baths and verandas. Whoever's doing the organising can hand out lodges to suit the group — the couples, the family with little ones, and the friends who'll inevitably be last to bed.

Where the party actually happens

The shared spaces are where a 40th comes to life. There's a cartlodge with a large pizza oven, a giant firepit made for cooking on the embers and standing around long after dark, a horsebox bar and a party barn for when the music goes on. The Piggery Spa, with its wood-fired sauna, is on hand for a gentle morning after.

A weekend, roughly

• Friday: arrive late afternoon, light the hot tubs, get the pizza oven going and ease into the evening around the firepit.

• Saturday: a slow morning with eggs from the hens, bikes or a run to the coast (Southwold and Aldeburgh are about 25 minutes away), then the big night — food, the bar and the barn.

• Sunday: no rush. Coffee, a last soak, a long and unhurried goodbye.

When to book

Whole-site weekends are the first dates to go, especially across summer and around Christmas and New Year. If you have a date in mind for a milestone birthday, it's worth enquiring early — for the most popular weekends, a year ahead isn't unusual.
