The quiet Suffolk coast in autumn: storm-watching and empty beaches from The Firs

Autumn is the Suffolk coast at its most atmospheric — empty beaches, dramatic skies, storm-watching and cosy pubs — and The Firs is the perfect warm retreat to come home to. Once the summer crowds have gone, the coast belongs to those in the know, and our countryside retreat puts it all within half an hour. We're 2 hours from London and 45 minutes from Norwich.
Beaches to yourself. Autumn empties the sands. Walk the long shingle at Aldeburgh, the wild beach at Dunwich, or the dunes at Walberswick with barely another soul about. Wrap up, breathe the salt air, and watch the big North Sea skies put on a show.
Storm-watching. There's a real thrill to the coast when the weather turns — waves crashing the shingle, wind off the sea, the light shifting by the minute. Southwold pier and seafront are bracing and brilliant on a blustery day, and there's always a warm café or pub to duck into.
Cosy rewards. The Suffolk coast does autumn hospitality beautifully: fish and chips eaten with cold fingers, a pint by a fire in a harbour pub, hot chocolate after a windswept walk. The historic Low House at Laxfield and the Fox & Goose at Fressingfield are wonderful warming stops closer to home.
Then home to The Firs. Nothing beats returning from a wild coastal day to a lit wood-burning stove, a steaming wood-fired hot tub and the sauna. Autumn is when our lodges feel most like a sanctuary.
For atmospheric autumn UK stays on the Suffolk coast, this countryside stay is a cosy, characterful base.
