The Firs Bike Foodie Hop: Fox & Goose, The Low House, and S'mores by Our Fire

A three-course bike ride through the lanes around Cratfield: a starter at the Fox & Goose in Fressingfield, a main course at the Low House in Laxfield, and dessert back at your own lodge, by your own fire.

Total loop: 11.2 miles, around an hour of cycling in total, spread across an afternoon rather than rushed in one go.

The route, course by course

Starter: The Fox & Goose, Fressingfield

4.1 miles from The Firs · around 22 minutes' cycle, on quiet lanes.

A destination gastropub in a beautiful timber-framed building — good for a proper starter or a light plate to open the afternoon. Book ahead if you can; it gets busy.

Main: The Low House (The Kings Head), Laxfield

A further 4.9 miles from Fressingfield · around 27 minutes' cycle.

Suffolk's famous tap-room pub, with no bar counter, a big garden, and real ale kept properly. A satisfying main course and a good stretch of the legs before the final leg home.

Dessert: S'mores at The Firs

2.2 miles back to The Firs · around 12 minutes' cycle.

The easiest leg, and the best-timed — arrive back as the light starts to go, get the firepit going, and finish the day with s'mores rather than a pudding menu. Ask us for extra logs if you need them.

Getting the timing right

Both pubs keep proper village hours, so the day only works on the right day of the week — worth checking before you set off rather than after.

  • Both are closed on Mondays — avoid entirely.

  • The Fox & Goose doesn't open for lunch on Saturdays (evening only, from 6:30pm), so a Saturday afternoon starter won't work.

  • Sunday works well for a leisurely lunch loop: both pubs are open across the early afternoon.

  • Tuesday to Friday also works for a lunchtime loop, with both open from midday.

If you'd rather do the loop as an evening meal, both are open for dinner Tuesday to Saturday — but you'll be cycling the final leg home in the dark. Bring lights, and keep it to one drink per stop if you're the one cycling.

Bikes

We have four Dutch-style bikes available to hire for the day, brought to your lodge on the morning of your ride. Ask us for details, or see our little extras.

FAQ

How long does the whole loop take?

Around an hour of actual cycling across the 11.2-mile loop. Budget three to four hours in total once you allow proper time to eat at each stop.

Is this suitable for children or less confident cyclists?

The lanes are quiet and Suffolk is flat, but the individual legs run 2 to 5 miles on shared roads rather than dedicated cycle paths. It suits confident family cyclists better than very young children.

What's the best day to do it?

Sunday lunchtime, when both pubs keep midday hours. Avoid Monday entirely, and don't plan a Saturday lunch starter at the Fox & Goose — they only open for dinner that day.

Do we need to book the pubs in advance?

We'd recommend it for the Fox & Goose especially, as it's the more in-demand of the two.
