Staying in The Cowshed: first impressions of our spacious country retreat for two

The Cowshed is a spacious lodge for two at The Firs — a retreat with room to breathe, with its own separate kitchen, living room and a generous bedroom, plus a private wood-fired hot tub outside. It's the lodge for couples who love the intimacy of a stay for two but don't want to feel hemmed into a single room.

Here's what guests notice first.

The Cowshed surprises people with its sense of space. Where a studio keeps everything in one room, the Cowshed gives you separate spaces to move between — a proper kitchen, a living room to spread out in, and a large bedroom you can retreat to. It means you can cook a real meal, settle in front of the wood-burner, and still have your sleeping space feel like a sanctuary rather than the spot the kettle lives.

That bedroom is built around a superking bed, the kind you sink into and resent leaving. The wood-burning stove does the heavy lifting on atmosphere — there's a particular pleasure in a slow Suffolk evening with the fire lit, the kitchen still warm from dinner, and absolutely nowhere you need to be.

Step outside and the private wood-fired hot tub is waiting. Heated by woodsmoke rather than a switch, it's the part of the Cowshed that turns an ordinary evening into the one you'll talk about later — soaking under open sky with the quiet of four acres around you.

This is a couples' lodge with the footprint of something larger: ideal for a longer stay, a special occasion, or anyone who simply likes a bit of elbow room on holiday. If you're travelling as a family or group, our four-person lodges will be a better fit — but for two people who want space as well as romance, the Cowshed is hard to beat.
