Not every hen wants inflatables, sashes and a pub crawl. A lot of brides-to-be — and a lot of the friends organising for them — want something quieter: good food, a private hot tub, maybe a sauna, and a setting nice enough that the photos don't need much editing.
We run The Firs, a six-lodge retreat in Suffolk that hosts a fair number of hen weekends each year, and we've noticed the same request again and again: something private, something a bit special, nothing tacky. Here's an honest list of venues — including ours — that suit that brief.
What actually matters for a grown-up hen weekend
Genuine privacy. For a hen weekend especially, a private hot tub that's actually private — not overlooked, not shared, not booked on a rota — matters more than almost anything else.
A proper space for the group to gather. Whether that's a big kitchen table, a barn, or a private dining room, the group needs somewhere to actually be together for the toast, the games, the speech, without perching on the edges of a small lounge.
Something to build an evening around. A sauna session, a wild swim, a private chef, a wine tasting — one genuine "moment" does more for a hen weekend than a long list of minor extras.
Enough beds without compromise. Hen weekends often have an awkward guest number — not quite big enough for whole-site hire everywhere, not small enough for a standard cottage. Check actual capacity against your real guest list.
No assumptions about what a "hen do" looks like. The best venues for this brief don't push sashes, games kits or themed extras on you — they simply provide a beautiful space and let the group decide what they want to do with it.
The Firs Suffolk
Where: Cratfield, Suffolk
Capacity: Sleeps up to 16 across six lodges
Why it works: Six private wood-fired hot tubs mean everyone gets proper soaking time, not a queue. The sauna at The Piggery Spa is a genuine "moment" to build an evening around. The party barn and pizza oven suit a low-key, food-and-fire-led celebration rather than a themed one.
Worth knowing: We don't do sashes, games kits or themed extras — if the bride wants that layer added, you'll need to bring it yourselves. What we do well is the setting and the privacy.
Fritton Lake
Where: Fritton, Somerleyton Estate
Capacity: Koto cabins, woodland cabins, farm cottages, eight clubhouse rooms
Why it works: A floating sauna and a genuine private lake give a hen weekend a properly memorable centrepiece activity — a group sunrise swim followed by the sauna is hard to beat. The Fritton Arms restaurant handles a celebration dinner without anyone having to cook.
Worth knowing: Private members' club — check current guest access arrangements before booking as a group.
Wilderness Reserve
Where: Sibton, Suffolk
Capacity: 18 properties, configurations from 2 to 60+
Why it works: Chapel Barn's indoor pool, sauna, steam room and two treatment rooms give a genuinely spa-like hen weekend without leaving the property. A Fire Feast with a Michelin-starred chef is a striking way to mark the occasion.
Worth knowing: Premium pricing throughout — this is the higher-budget end of the list.
Daylesford Stays
Where: Daylesford and surrounding villages, Cotswolds
Capacity: 15 cottages, plus larger farmhouses
Why it works: The Bamford Wellness Spa (cold plunge, sauna, hot tub, treatment rooms) can anchor a proper pampering day. The Cookery School offers a genuinely different group activity for hens who'd rather cook together than sit through a hen-party game.
Worth knowing: Two-night minimum stay. Properties spread across several villages.
Badwell Ash Holiday Lodges
Where: Mid Suffolk
Capacity: Adults-only cabins around three fishing lakes
Why it works: Adults-only throughout, which suits a hen weekend that wants genuine peace and quiet rather than a party-house atmosphere. Each cabin has its own private hot tub.
Worth knowing: The setting leans rustic and peaceful rather than polished-luxury — worth knowing if the group is picturing something more design-forward.
The Lakes by Yoo
Where: Lechlade, Cotswolds
Capacity: 100+ lakeside houses, curated selection for short-term rental
Why it works: Design-led houses give genuinely striking photos without effort. Watersports, a climbing wall and a zipline suit a more active hen weekend, and the on-site restaurant handles the celebration dinner.
Worth knowing: A large resort, so you'll share some amenities with other guests despite the scale of the estate.
How we'd choose
For a quiet, food-and-fire-led weekend without any pressure to do "hen do" activities, The Firs or Badwell Ash suit best. For a genuine spa-and-wellness focus, Wilderness Reserve or Daylesford's Bamford spa. For a striking, photogenic setting with something to build the whole weekend around, Fritton Lake's floating sauna or The Lakes by Yoo's design-led houses.

How far in advance should we book a hen weekend?
Popular dates (spring, summer, and any weekend close to the wedding itself) can book up 6 to 9 months ahead at the venues on this list. Booking earlier gives you more choice of dates.
What's a reasonable group size for these venues?
Most of these suit groups of 8 to 16 comfortably. For smaller hen groups of 4 to 6, individual couples' lodges (rather than whole-site hire) may be a better fit and more cost-effective.
