Couples' lodges with private hot tubs in the East of England: what to check, and 6 honest picks
"Private hot tub" is one of the most misused phrases in UK holiday listings. It gets attached to shared courtyard tubs, tubs booked on a rota, and tubs that are private in theory but visible from three neighbouring gardens. For a couples' weekend, the difference matters more than almost anything else on the listing.
We run six lodges in Suffolk — The Firs — four of which are built specifically for two. We've spent eight years fielding the same question from couples booking a weekend away: is the hot tub actually private? This is an honest look at what to check, and six East of England venues (including ours) where the answer is genuinely yes.
What to check before booking a "couples' hot tub lodge"
Is it visible from anywhere else? Ask directly: can neighbouring guests, dog walkers, or a shared driveway see into the hot tub. A truly private tub is screened by fencing, planting, or distance.
Is it heated and ready, or an extra faff? Wood-fired tubs need lighting a few hours ahead — lovely as a ritual, less lovely if you weren't told. Electric tubs are instant but less atmospheric. Ask which you're getting.
What's the bed situation, really? "King" and "super-king" get used loosely. If a huge bed matters to you, ask for the actual dimensions.
Is there a sauna too? A growing number of couples' lodges now pair the hot tub with a small private sauna. Worth asking, since it's not always in the headline listing.
How far is it from anyone else? Distance from the road, from other guests, from a working farmyard — all worth a direct question if peace and quiet is the whole point of the weekend.
The Firs Suffolk
Where: Cratfield, Suffolk · 2 hours from London · 25 minutes from Southwold
The couples' lodges: The Butterchurn (romantic studio, kingsize bed, apple trees on one side, sundowner deck on the other), The Cowshed (separate kitchen and living room, superking bed, wood-fired soaking tub outside), The Old Press (attached to the old Tithe Barn, roll-top bath, firepit, silver birches), The Apple Bobber (luxury safari tent by the moat, four-poster superking bed, private jetty)
Distinctive: Each of our four couples' lodges has its own private wood-fired hot tub and wood-burning stove — no shared courtyards, no rota. Four acres of grounds with no neighbouring properties. Access to the sauna at The Piggery Spa, the kitchen garden, and the natural swimming moat.
Worth knowing: Wood-fired tubs need lighting a few hours ahead — we'll talk you through it on arrival. Best May to October; The Apple Bobber is a safari tent so is seasonal.
Fynn Valley Luxury Self Catering Lodges
Where: Near Ipswich, Suffolk
Distinctive: Two-bedroom lodges (Cowslip, Cornflower, Teasel) each with a private hot tub and, unusually, a private internal sauna as well. Super-king beds with goosedown bedding, ensuite bathrooms, Smeg kitchens, Sonos sound system.
Worth knowing: Lodges sleep up to 6, so they suit couples wanting extra space as much as pure two-person breaks. Close to Ipswich for those wanting easy access rather than deep countryside isolation.
Windmill Lodges
Where: Suffolk
Distinctive: A range of one to three-bedroom log cabins. Chaffinch is a one-bedroom cabin built specifically for romantic breaks. Kingfisher, their five-star two-bedroom cabin, pairs a hot tub with a private sauna.
Worth knowing: A working holiday park with a range of cabin grades — check which specific cabin has the sauna as well as the tub, since not all of them do.
Badwell Ash Holiday Lodges
Where: Mid Suffolk
Distinctive: Adults-only throughout, which some couples specifically look for. Scandinavian-style log cabins set around three private fishing lakes, each with its own hot tub. Damsel, a two-person shepherd's hut, has a private hot tub, wood burner and hot shower for a smaller, cosier version of the same idea.
Worth knowing: The fishing-lake setting means the atmosphere leans peaceful and slightly rustic rather than polished-luxury — worth knowing if you're picturing something more design-led.
Orchard Spa Retreat
Where: Near Beccles, Norfolk/Suffolk border
Distinctive: En-suite lodges with private hot tub, overlooking fields frequented by deer and kites. An on-site spa offers facials, massages, body scrubs and treatments — useful if you want spa treatments built into the same booking rather than travelling elsewhere for them.
Worth knowing: Positioned right on the Norfolk/Suffolk border, so it works well if your group is torn between the two counties.
Fritton Lake (Koto cabins)
Where: Fritton, Somerleyton Estate, Norfolk/Suffolk border
Distinctive: The design-led Koto cabins at this private members' and holiday club have private hot tubs, set within a 1,000-acre rewilding project with a two-mile lake, floating sauna, and heated outdoor pool.
Worth knowing: Private members' club — check current guest access arrangements before booking. Not all cabins on the estate have hot tubs, so specify Koto when enquiring.
How we'd choose
If a private sauna alongside the hot tub matters to you, Fynn Valley or Windmill Lodges' Kingfisher cabin are the strongest options. If adults-only quiet is the priority, Badwell Ash. If you want spa treatments as part of the same stay, Orchard Spa Retreat. If design and a wider estate to explore matters more than pure seclusion, Fritton Lake's Koto cabins. And if you want a proper wood-burning stove, a roll-top bath and genuine acreage around you with zero neighbours, that's us.

FAQ
How do I know if a hot tub is genuinely private?
Ask the venue directly: "Is this hot tub visible from any other guest accommodation, a shared driveway, or a public path?" A vague answer is itself the answer.
Wood-fired or electric hot tub — which is better?
Wood-fired takes a few hours to heat and needs someone to light it, but many couples find the ritual part of the appeal. Electric tubs are near-instant. Ask which type you're booking, and if wood-fired, ask what time you need to arrive to have it ready for the evening.
Is a couples' lodge worth it over a normal cottage with a hot tub?
A cottage can have a bolted-on hot tub as an afterthought. A dedicated couples' lodge is usually designed around the tub and the privacy from the ground up — worth the difference in most cases if privacy and atmosphere matter to you.
