Dunwich Heath and autumn walks on the Suffolk coast from The Firs

Dunwich Heath is one of the most beautiful places in Suffolk in late summer and autumn, when the heather turns the clifftop purple and the coastal walks empty of crowds. It's an easy drive from The Firs, which makes our countryside retreat a perfect base for golden-season walking. We're 2 hours from London and 45 minutes from Norwich.

Dunwich Heath (National Trust) is a rare survival of lowland heath, running down to a quiet shingle beach. In late summer the heather blooms in waves of purple and gold — a glorious sight — and as autumn settles in, the heath takes on russet tones under big coastal skies. There are trails for all abilities, a clifftop tea-room for a warming stop, and superb birdwatching (Dartford warblers and, at dusk, the chance of a hunting harrier).

From there, the wider coast opens up for autumn rambles. Walk the wild beach and ruins-and-legends of Dunwich, the reedy paths around Walberswick, or the cliff-top from Southwold. Cooler air, golden light and quiet sands make autumn arguably the finest season for walking this coast — followed, of course, by a warming pub lunch.

The lanes and field paths around Cratfield are lovely in autumn too, so you needn't travel far to stretch your legs straight from the lodge.

And the reward at the end of a brisk autumn walk? Home to The Firs, the wood-burning stove, a wood-fired hot tub and the sauna — the perfect way to thaw out.

For autumn walking UK stays on the Suffolk coast, this countryside stay is an idyllic base.
