Wild swimming and lazy summer days at The Firs

Summer at The Firs is best spent without leaving — wild swimming in the moat, long days across four acres of gardens, and wood-fired hot tubs under late, golden sunsets. Our countryside retreat is the kind of place where the whole holiday can happen on site. We're 2 hours from London and 45 minutes from Norwich, but once you're here, there's little reason to go anywhere.

Take a dip in the moat. For the brave, the moat offers proper wild swimming — a private, spring-fed natural pond surrounded by silver birches and skimmed by dragonflies. Because it's a private natural pond, there's no formal water testing required; it's simply swimming in nature, the old-fashioned way. There are few better ways to start a summer morning.

Live outside. The gardens come into their own in summer: garden games on the lawn, lazy reading in the shade, and the kitchen garden in full growth. Children roam happily for hours; adults find a quiet corner and a cold drink.

Cook on fire. Summer evenings are made for the outdoor kitchen — fire the pizza oven, light the firepit, and eat outside as the light softens. Slow breakfasts, pizza under the stars for supper.

End in the hot tub. When the sun finally dips, sink into your private wood-fired hot tub and watch the Suffolk sky turn from gold to navy. A session in the sauna rounds off the day.

For summer UK stays where doing very little is the whole point, this countryside stay is a slow, sun-soaked Suffolk gem.
