Staying in The Stables: first impressions of our most flexible lodge
The Stables is a two-bedroom, two-bathroom lodge for up to four guests, set in a converted 19th-century stable block at The Firs. It's the most flexible of our six lodges — equally happy hosting two couples, a small family, or friends who want their own space without sacrificing the shared evenings.
Here's what it actually feels like to stay.
You arrive to a building that wears its history lightly: old stables, thoughtfully converted, with the character kept and the comfort dialled all the way up. The first thing most guests do is find the swing-seat veranda and sit down — it's the spot you'll keep coming back to with a coffee in the morning and a glass of something in the evening.
Inside, there's a generous, light-filled kitchen and living space at the heart of the lodge, designed for the bit of a stay people remember most: everyone in one room, something cooking, no rush to be anywhere. The two bedrooms each have their own ensuite, so nobody's queuing or compromising — and one of those bathrooms has a deep cast iron roll-top bath that has been known to keep guests soaking for the better part of an evening.
The detail couples and families both love: each superking bed can be split into two large single beds, so the same lodge works whether you're two couples wanting doubles or a family needing singles for the children. That single bit of flexibility is why The Stables is the lodge we most often suggest when a group isn't sure quite how they want to sleep.
And then there's the private wood-fired hot tub — yours alone, with no neighbours in sight — and a wood-burning stove for the cooler evenings, which is most of them worth having.
