Cycling to the Fox & Goose: a lunch ride from The Firs to Fressingfield

If you want a bike ride with a properly good lunch at the end of it, point your wheels north from The Firs towards Fressingfield and the Fox & Goose. It's around 4 to 5 miles each way on quiet lanes, and the reward is one of the best places to eat in this corner of Suffolk.
The ride. We keep bikes on site, so you can set off straight from your lodge. The route to Fressingfield runs through the hedge-lined lanes of High Suffolk — gently rolling, very quiet, and almost traffic-free once you're off the few B-roads. Allow 25 to 35 minutes at a relaxed pace. It's the kind of ride where you'll stop more for the views and the birdsong than for breath.
The destination. The Fox & Goose is a Grade II-star listed former Guildhall dating to 1509, sitting beside the church in the middle of Fressingfield. Behind the timber-framed, period frontage is a kitchen that's earned two AA rosettes and a place in the Michelin and Harden's guides — modern British cooking built on local ingredients, served in a building dripping with atmosphere. There's a relaxed pub side for a drink and pub classics, and a more formal restaurant for a longer lunch.
It's a destination restaurant, so this is the cycle for the day you want to make an occasion of — a leisurely two- or three-course lunch, then an easy roll home to a hot tub.
Worth knowing:
Book ahead. The Fox & Goose is popular and not somewhere to chance a walk-in, particularly at weekends and for Sunday lunch. Reserve your table before you set off.
Time your ride around the kitchen. Check serving hours when you book so your cycle lands in the right window.
Lights and layers. If lunch runs long and you're riding back towards dusk, the lanes are unlit — take lights, and a layer, as it cools quickly once the sun drops.
Prefer to drive? It's an easy 10-minute drive too, with parking on site — handy if the weather turns or you'd like wine with lunch.
A good ride, a great meal, and the smug satisfaction of having earned every mouthful. Hard to beat.
