A walking and cycling week in Suffolk: explore on foot and by bike from The Firs

For walkers and cyclists, a week at The Firs opens up some of the quietest, gentlest countryside in England. This corner of High Suffolk is a web of traffic-light lanes, field paths and medieval villages, with the coast and its footpaths under half an hour away — and as a countryside retreat with bikes on site, we make the ideal base for an active week. We're 2 hours from London and 45 minutes from Norwich.

A week lets you build up nicely. Start with gentle loops on the lanes around Cratfield, stretch out to the neighbouring villages of Laxfield and Fressingfield (each with a wonderful pub at the end of the ride), and work towards longer days along the Suffolk coast paths around Southwold, Walberswick and Dunwich Heath. The terrain is forgiving — flat to gently rolling — so it suits everyone from serious cyclists to families finding their feet.

The joy of an active week here is what waits at the end of each day. Tired legs sink gratefully into a private wood-fired hot tub; a session in the sauna eases the miles away; and a slow evening by the firepit with the pizza oven going is the perfect reward. You earn your rest, then you properly take it.

Pack boots and bring (or borrow) a bike. For active UK stays that pair real exploring with genuine recovery, this countryside stay is a quiet favourite — and a week is just enough to feel you've really seen the place at the pace it deserves.
